Greetings to you from our Association. We are a small Association covering from one ocean to the other. We are near to Simon's Town, a harbour town which once was an important Royal Navy Station. Some of your members may have been stationed here during World War 2. Our history is recent - the township dating back to 1918 BUT we have claim, to fame in our Peers Cave. Archaeological diggings found remains going back about 12000 years. Everything of the best

Just thought I'd inquire on the net about any town in England called Abbott since that is my maiden and family name. Bray is my married name. I may visit England in April 2001 and may visit your town. Who would I contact to get information on lodging or places of interest there. My father's side of the family is from Canada, and I assume the Abbotts originally came from England.

I havw e-mailed Don Perry and posted him a Flint Family Tree. Don is descended from Harry Flint who lived in Adrian Road in 1881, one of the brothers of "Old Reuben Flint who lived in Breakspear Road."Old" Reuben and his descendants stayed in Abbots Langley and founded "Flint Brothers" builders and decorators. Roger Flint still lives in the village though I have moved away. Harry Flint and his family including Helen Flint (Don Perry's grandmother) emigrated to Canada in the early 1900s. Contact between the families was lost in 1938. Thanks to the Abbots Langley Local History Society web site for bringing about a re-connection.

How did I find - by pure accident. However I did live in Abbotts Langley for a few months from Sept1967 to Spring '98. Just after our wedding we lived in a couple of rooms at "The Poodle Hotel",a breeding kennel near the railway and not far from the railway tunnel. If anyone knows if this place still exists I would be interested to know. Seem to rember it was not too far from the Hemel Hempstead Road as I had to catch a bus no:302 to Kodak. Thanks for any information that you may have.

I lived in Abbots Langley as a child from 1955 - 1968. I used
to attend the local Primary school, and was horrified to learn,
when I revisted the vilage a couple of years ago, that
it had been destroyed. I am coming again in March, so I must
visit once more and go to the Library to see if some of the local
history publications are there for sale. I had no idea (and
no one taught me) of the history of the village in which I lived.

My sister,Susan, was born in 1949 & in 1953 they moved to 57 Breakspeare Road. They were the first house in the road to have electric lights. Also he was also the first person in the road to have a television which he built himself. After discovering that my family lived in Bedmont (Bedmond now) and worked as farmers and Higglers between 1800 and 1850 I decided to visited the Local Church in Abbot’s Langley as I had also discovered that family members had married there.
Visiting the church and churchyard was very bizarre. A very strange feeling knowing that 170 years earlier my surname was created. My Surname is Rolph-Dickinson. Rolph from the female side and Dickinson from the male. I visited the library next to the church and discovered other interesting facts about the local area, so worth a visit if you have time.
I would be very grateful if through your site I can add to my findings, and therefore if anyone has any further information they can contact me.

If I can establish its whereabouts I wanted to try and find out more about my mosaic of the archangel Raphael if possible. Thank You for whetting my apitite to visit Abbots Langley.

I found the site very interesting, i came across it whilt searching for information on leavesden hospital / asylum.
I am doing some research into the hospital on behalf of a lady i work with who lived there from an early age. Unfortunately she cannot talk and has no family, so im trying to find out about it and gather pictures if possible for her and the staff that work here.
If anyone can help me in any way it would be very much appreciated as ive found nothing else on the net so im getting nowhere fast! Also if anyone knows her family name SADLER please contact me if you think there may be a connection,we belive she was born in Dunstable in 1946 but as i said we havent got alot to go on and dont even know if what we have is true.
Can anyone help?!!

My Grandparents live in Abbots Road, and I have very fond memories of Abbots Langley. Walking up the hill to the village to Mrs Millers sweet shop or the toy shop, or just to have a wander around. Both my parents grew up in the area and were married at the Methodist Church, where I was later Christened. We moved to Australia in 1989, when I was only 11, but to me Abbots Langley will always be a magical place. I am looking forward to revisiting it later this year and am sure it won't have lost any of it's magical appeal.

What a most interesting web site! I serve as President of the Randolph CALDECOTT (1846-1886) Society of America, based in St. Augustine, Florida. Caldecott was an English artist, illustrator, and sculptor. He died and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida, while visiting America in 1885-86. The American Library Association gives a medal for outstanding illustrations in a Children's Book, annually, in his honor. I am seeking information on his mentor and "best friend", Thomas Armstrong (1832-1911) who lived and died in Abbots Langley. He produced a memorial to his son in The Church of St. Lawrence the Martyr. The Armstrongs lived in "The Abbot's House". Hello. I found your site on a Google search for Abbots Langley after tonight learning that an ancestor named Martha Davyes, 1609-1694 originated from there. I am an American living in England for 30 years now. My sister in California has done some productive recent research on our hitherto nonexistent family tree, so I would like to begin looking on this side if possible. Is anything known about Martha or any Davyes? I would be grateful for any help.

I would like to know the date of death and any other information on the Rt. Rev'd BENJAMIN CHARLES HARRIS. He was a bishop in the FREE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH, being consecrated that church's bishop for Essex in 1915. He served as a nonconformist chaplain to the mental hospital in Abbots Langley. He died sometime after Sept 1944 and must have been elderly at the time. Any information would be appreciated.

I found the excellent web site of Leverstock Green (Barbara Chapman) and the AL website was kindly given to me by Barbara.
I attended Mater Salvatoris Convent School from 1952 - 1957 the school was situated at Kitters Green, AL. Sister Bonosa and Sister Margaret Mary were teaching at the school during these years. I would appreciate hearing from anybody who may remember the school and could tell me what happened as it has disappeared. When I visited for the first time in 20 years it seemed as if a "pub" had been built on the site.

Well done, very useful.
I used to visit regularly in my youth (I'm almost 50 years old now) as an Uncle and Aunt lived there. In fact I was in Ilford on busienss the other day when I realised I could make a detour on my way home. I had a most pleasant hour remeniscing when I found that quite a lot remained unchanged and was as pretty as I remembered it. They used to live just along from the Bell on Primrose Hill opposite the park and sports fields. I used to feed a donkey in a field where the small industrial estate now is and walk along the Grand Union canal.

I am interested in my great grandfather, George Lay. According to my grandfather's wedding certificate, he was born in Kingfield , Abbots Langley. His occupation was given as 'Assistant Leavesden Asylum' (Spelling of Leavesden not clear on certificate -could be Lavesden or suchlike). Sometime later he must have moved to Woking which is where my grandfather was born. I would be interested to hear if Lay is a common name in Abbots Langley or any other information that might be relevant. I will be contacting the local church and may even get to visit the area to scout around for any clues.
Many thanks in anticipation. It's great that you have such a good website.

I was born in the village in 1960 and now live in Virginia, USA. I am working on a collection of short stories based in the village and am interested in hearing from anyone who remembers any interesting, sad, bad, happy, funny events that occurred in the village between 1970 and the present date. I’d like to try and incorporate some “real” aspects into my work. Please email me if anything comes to mind.

I moved to Abbots Langley in 1947 just after the war, went to the old flint infants school in the village, headmaster Mr Risley, with Pocock & Mrs Coleman & her two Chow Dogs. The classroom,a wooden hut in the churchyard. The local sweetshop opposite, run by two sisters where you could buy liquorice roots & gob stoppers, penny each. The village was idyllic with its cricket pitch, six pubs & the Rev R Wilkinson, the only thing that moved on the road was a cow herd from Hazelwood Farm & Henry Little's horse & cart selling fresh veg.I moved to Langleybury school in the coronation year,Mr Risley again. The Georgian mansion with its walled gardens, farm, mews, buttery & large dinner gong.Great memories.Left school at 15,joined Royal Navy and the real world.Like to hear from anybody who knows me...BY

I live in a new development in Abbots Langley, having moved into the area just a year ago from Manchester. I am just curious as to the old building on Tibbs Hill Road (on the opposite side to the Compasses pub) It has now been converted into flats but looks like it might have been an old police station or even a coach house. Looks late 19th century I think. Does anyone know what it might have been. Thanks, Rachel

Family folklore has it that our branch of the greenhill family tree descended from Thomas Greenhill, the seventh son and 39th child of Elizabeth and William Greenhill of Abbots Langley.
I understand that the records of St Lawrence’s Church were destroyed in a fire in 1969.
